I think most of you will agree when I say we should be trying to encourage more people onto the railways.

Cheap advance purchase tickets similar to the old "Apex" tickets are a sure way of making train travel more attractive, but these tickets are not easy to get as they are only available on certain journeys and at particular times, and only if you know about them.

As some of you may already know, it is often cheaper to break your journey and buy several tickets to complete your journey than it is to purchase one ticket for the entire journey. I did this recently on a journey from Essex to Birmingham and managed to save ten pounds on the cost of the normal price that most unsuspecting passengers would be paying.

Cheap off-peak or restricted tickets should be known about and available to everyone. They should be offered first at the ticket office when buying tickets and you should not have to have a degree in computer studies and have to visit several different sites for every single ticket bought if buying them in the above manner from "National Rail Enquiries" web site.

It seems that our government, like others before is just trying to make the right noises about attracting people onto trains and does not really intend making a commitment. Hence introducing cheaper tickets but not pulicising them adequately, making them as difficult as possible to buy.

S Barton.
