Toys Or Trains?

Congratulations to Hornby for their recent efforts with brand new highly detailed models. Classes 31 and 50, Gresley and Pullman stock to name but a few.

Why therefore at the same time do Hornby insist in reviving ancient models, for example the ex Triang Mk1 and many of the current wagons including the ferry wagon? These should have gone to model train heaven years ago. Not to mention the class 37 and 47 that are still being made and retailing at similar prices to other manufacturer's much advanced equivalents.

At the same time they are also acquiring other manufacturer's toolings, and simply re releasing even more outdated models. The ex Airfix air conditioned MK2d is a good example of this. Some of the re released models mentioned date from the late sixties / early seventies!

Yet the price charged by Hornby does not reflect the fact that you are buying old technology and tooling, as their Mk1s and Mk2s for example retail at a similar price to the much newer and far superior Bachmann models.

Another irritation is the release of the Mk4 DVT in "One" livery. Come on Hornby! This is merely a representation, as the real thing is a MK3 with a body profile to match a Mk3 coach. In my view this is not a model, but a toy. The only person likely to buy this is a kid, but wouldn't be able to afford it as in the case of the Mk1s and 2s, it is in the premium price bracket.

Hornby have the ability to produce great detailed models as they have produced some splendid new models recently.

When will Hornby decide whether they are a model railway manufacturer that produces up to date detailed models or a toy manufacturing company that produces crude outdated and over priced toys?
